A science puzzle toy

I dreamed the design for an interesting science toy last night.

It was a set of shaped pieces of plastic, with curves and slots, some more flexible than others. Each had a different transparency and degree and axis of birefringence. The challenge was to fit several together in such a way that, when viewed through crossed polarising filters in white light, they would all appear the same. There were many different ways of solving this.

I wonder if such a toy could practically be made?
